Parkinson is a systemic disorder: first evidence of duodenal pathology in early and advanced patients

In this research paper, we aimed to investigate the presence of alpha-synuclein aggregates, and the role played by enteric glial cells (EGCs), in the gastro-intestinal tract of early and advanced Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients. We report that aggregated alpha-synuclein is detectable in the nerve fibers of the intestinal mucosa, and that both quantitative and qualitative morphometrical analyses can reliably discern PD patients from controls. Furthermore, we evidenced pathological changes in EGCs size and density, compatible with enteric gliosis, in absence of direct interaction between EGCs and aggregated alpha-synuclein.

These findings indicate that GI biopsies may represent a safe and feasible tool for disease detection.
